How to choose a dog trainer
Methods matter more than qualifications, and both matter more than price.

Dog training is unregulated, so anyone can call themselves a trainer. Choose carefully.
Ask about methods
Look for trainers who use reward-based, force-free methods. Be cautious of anyone who talks about dominance, alpha rolls, or who uses slip leads, prong collars or e-collars as a standard tool.
Good signs
- Membership of a recognised professional body
- Continuing education and up-to-date qualifications
- Happy to let you observe a class
- Clear about what they cannot help with, and refer to a behaviourist or vet when needed
Behaviour vs training
Pulling on lead, recall and manners are training. Aggression, separation distress and severe fear are behaviour problems and usually need a qualified behaviourist working alongside your vet.
