Choosing a walker is choosing someone to be alone with your dog, and often in your home. Take it seriously.
Ask for
- Public liability insurance and, ideally, care/custody cover
- How many dogs they walk at once, and whether groups are matched by size and temperament
- Whether dogs travel crated or harnessed in the van
- Their policy on off-lead walking and recall
- Canine first aid training
- What happens in extreme heat or ice
- References or reviews from current clients
Do a trial
Book one walk before committing to a schedule, and ask for a photo or short update from it.
Trust your dog
A dog that is keen to go with someone is telling you something useful. So is one that hides.
