Puppy socialisation done properly
Quality of experience beats quantity of encounters.
Socialisation is not meeting as many dogs as possible. It is learning that the world is safe and predictable.
The window
The key period runs to roughly 12 to 16 weeks. Before full vaccination you can still carry your puppy out, drive them places and sit and watch the world.
What to expose them to
Traffic, hoovers, bikes, wheelie bins, umbrellas, hats, beards, children at a distance, other calm adult dogs, being handled, car journeys, being alone briefly.
The rule
Your puppy should be able to observe, retreat and choose. Never force a greeting or hold them still while something scary happens.
Signs it is too much
Freezing, tucking the tail, trying to get away, refusing food they normally love. End the session and make the next one easier.
