Crate training without tears

A crate should be a bedroom, never a punishment.

Used well, a crate gives a dog a safe place to switch off.

Setup

Big enough to stand, turn and stretch out. Comfortable bedding, in a quiet corner of a room where the family is, not isolated.

Building value

Feed meals in there with the door open. Scatter treats inside during the day. Give long-lasting chews only in the crate. Never shut the door until your dog goes in willingly and settles.

Duration

Build from seconds to minutes. Adult dogs should not be crated for long stretches; puppies far less.

Never

Do not use the crate to punish, and do not crate a dog who panics in one. Some dogs do far better with a pen or a dog-proofed room.
