Introducing a new cat or dog to your home

Rushing introductions is the single most common mistake.

Separate first

Give the new arrival one room with everything they need for several days.

Swap scent

Exchange bedding and swap rooms so each animal explores the other's space without meeting.

Visual, then physical

Introduce through a baby gate or a cracked door. Keep sessions short and end while everyone is calm. Only progress when both are relaxed and eating.

Dogs and cats

The cat must always have escape routes and high places the dog cannot reach. Keep the dog on a lead indoors at first and reward calm disengagement rather than staring.

Timeline

Weeks, not days. Cats in particular can take two months to accept a newcomer.
