Noise phobia gets worse each year if it is not addressed.
Build a den
A covered, quiet space in an interior room, made comfortable weeks in advance so it is already a good place.
On the night
Close curtains, put on background noise, feed early, walk before dark, and keep cats in with a tray. Stay calm and let your pet choose where to be. Comforting a frightened animal does not reinforce fear.
Longer term
Sound desensitisation programmes work, but need to start months ahead. Pheromone diffusers and supplements help some pets.
Talk to your vet
For severe phobia there are safe, effective medications. Avoid old-fashioned sedatives that immobilise a pet while leaving them terrified.
