How much should I feed my dog?

Start with the label, then adjust to the body, not the bowl.

Feeding guidelines on packaging are a starting point, not a prescription. Two dogs of the same weight can need very different amounts.

Judge by body condition

You should be able to feel the ribs easily with flat hands, see a waist from above and a tuck from the side. If you cannot, reduce food by about 10% and reassess in a month.

Treats count

Treats and chews should be no more than 10% of daily intake. Take that amount out of meals.

Frequency

Adults: twice daily. Puppies: three to four times. Deep-chested breeds should rest before and after eating.

Weight matters

Keeping a dog lean is one of the few things proven to extend life and reduce arthritis. If in doubt, ask your vet nurse for a body condition score.
