Dental care for dogs and cats

Most pets over three have dental disease. It is painful and preventable.

Dental disease is the most common condition vets see, and pets hide the pain well.

Gold standard

Brushing daily with a pet toothpaste. Never use human toothpaste. Build it up over two weeks: touch the muzzle, then lift the lip, then a finger brush, then a brush.

Also useful

Dental diets, approved chews and water additives with a proven track record. Antlers, hooves and bones frequently fracture teeth.

Warning signs

Bad breath, dropping food, chewing on one side, drooling, pawing at the mouth, red gums, brown tartar.

Scale and polish

Done under anaesthetic. It is not cosmetic; painful teeth change how a pet eats, sleeps and behaves.
