How often should I groom my dog?

Coat type decides your schedule, at home and at the salon.

Grooming is not vanity, it is skin health.

By coat type

  • Smooth coats: a weekly rubber brush, salon rarely needed
  • Double coats: brush 2 to 3 times a week, more when moulting. Never shave them
  • Curly and wool coats: brush daily to the skin, salon every 6 to 8 weeks
  • Wire coats: hand strip every few months
  • Long silky coats: daily combing, salon every 4 to 6 weeks

Matting

Matts tighten and pull on skin, trap moisture and hide sores. If a matt does not lift away from the skin with a comb, it needs a groomer, not scissors at home.

Between salon visits

Check ears, trim nails every few weeks, and brush teeth daily if you can.
